Places to Visit

Minehead harbour at nightWe are located on the edge of the small seaside town of Minehead, minutes from its sheltered sandy beach, its attractive harbour (right) and ‘The Avenue’ with its shops and eating places. However until our guests take a stroll they are scarcely aware of this, so secluded is our Edwardian house within its grounds, giving views of the surrounding hills and glimpses of the sea. Minehead is not so seasonal as other resorts, with visitors (especially walkers) all year round. The mild climate helps! January is the quietest month, but it is getting lively again in February. We have prepared a special page which we hope will answer your questions about local information & facilities in Minehead

Minehead's Higher Town - picture shows the famous Church Steps. From our front door a short walk brings you to the edge of the Exmoor National Park at North Hill (left) where the South West Coast long distance footpath begins. Take the path or drive up the road nearby into glorious moorland heather scenery with breath-taking coastal views. Minehead is a popular starting point for touring, walking, riding or cycling in the Exmoor National Park, with more than 600 miles of footpaths. The town also offers sports centres, a fine golf course, tennis courts, bowling greens and the famous West Somerset Steam Railway. There are excellent sailing and wind surfing facilities at Minehead, Porlock Weir and Watchet, and racing, cricket and polo at Taunton. Exmoor stretches to the West and South rewarding its visitors with wooded coombes and river valleys, open moorland, pretty villages and England’s most spectacular coastline. For more details about outdoor activities on Exmoor, visit Somerset's own  Active Outdoors Website!

Looking down on the vale of Porlock & Porlock Bay from Selworthy BeaconTo the West lies Porlock Vale (right) which shelters the picturesque National Trust villages of Selworthy, Allerford, Bossington and Horner. Porlock Weir is a good place to relax or explore the broad shingle beach that sweeps round Porlock Bay. The scenic drive up famous Porlock Hill brings you onto high coastal moorland, where a short run brings you down into Lynton and Lynmouth in North Devon.

The ancient Yarn Market at DunsterJust to the East is historic Dunster with its famous ancient Yarn Market (left) and Castle. Dunster holds a magnificent spectacle "Dunster by Candlelight" on 2 days each year near Christmas - highly recommended! On the coast are the attractive Blue Anchor and Dunster beaches and the quaint fishing port of Watchet, with its recently completed 280-berth marina. Away from the coast is the superb rambling country of the Brendon and Quantock Hills

Shopping in Minehead

Our guests report that shopping in Minehead is excellent all year round (with the possible exception of January). There are many good shops for gifts & presents of all sorts. Two in particular: Best Price and The Original Factory Shop offer branded and unbranded goods at a large discount on high street prices. There are many good stores for clothes, local produce (including meat, fish, cider and wine, cheese, chocolates and arts & crafts). Minehead has branches of all the high street banks, Smiths, Boots, Co-op, Tesco and plenty of choice of places to eat. In short, it makes an excellent base for visitors to West Somerset.
